Consistency is key

When it comes to exercise, consistency trumps intensity. You would be better served completing 12 moderate intensity exercise bouts in a month than doing 2 very high intensity bouts in a month. The best way to create positive adaptations is to continue to turn up. Just get your runners on, get to the gym, and the hard part is already over. Consistency is key.

Black Swans

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. In his book; The Black Swan, Nassim Nicholas Taleb speaks about, well, Black Swans. They are the highly improbable and unpredicted events that often shape the world as we perceive it. The story states that it was once believed that swans could only be white - that it was not possible for a swan to be black.  This was until 1697 when Dutch navigator, Willem de Vlamingh stumbled upon black swans on his expedition in Western Australia. This is a now well-known example which illustrates the fallacy of thinking we can predict future events. An absence of evidence that black swans exist, is not equivalent to evidence that they do not exist. We are currently living in the midst of a Black Swan event - what will come next is difficult to predict.

Why Science?

What makes scientific evidence such a reputable source of information? The goal of science is to form a hypothesis and try to disprove it - once a hypothesis is formed, a scientist will actively strive to prove the hypothesis wrong. Due to this dynamic, science is the best method we have of refining our best guess of what should be categorised as "fact". When trying to find accurate information, you should always aim to use evidence-based, peer-reviewed science - as this is humankind's best current guess.
